On The Battle Line

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

As I get older I find myself constantly tempted to look at sunsets. Not because of their beauty but for what they represent in our culture- retirement. Spiritually I catch myself thinking about retirement too. About finding an easy chair and shade. About slumber and napping. About checking out of the battle. And then I think about how unhappy that would make God.

Like marriage I realize I’m united with Christ until death, and beyond. When I made Jesus Lord of my life I meant it….forever! That means dying with my boots on. Thank God for brothers and sisters like James and Joann who are living that out before us. In so many ways leading the charge. When so many their age would be looking for a hammock by the lake they are armed for battle with sword and shield in hand. That inspires and convicts me.

I picture all of us on the front line. When one of us has to check out for a while, those on either side must stretch, lock arms and cover for the missing soldier. Looking back over our shoulders we yell, “Get done what you need and get back on the line.” To tarry just wouldn’t be right.

Let me encourage you to stay in the battle. If you have checked out hurry up and get done what you need. If you are hurting, heal, if you are discouraged get inspiration, if you are caught in the snare of the devil, repent. Get back to the Lord’s work. We need everyone on the front line.
Songs help me….old songs like: We’ll Work ‘til Jesus Comes, Soldiers of Christ Arise, or To the Work.

Scripture too: like: Eph. 2:10, Col. 1:10, Col. 3:23, I Tim 6:18

C. Eaton

One footnote: Someone please find a 2×4 and whack me upside the head if you ever hear me taking “potshots” at guys on the front line. Even if they aren’t “doing it” right or not doing it the way I would do it.
